It’s been a while since I’ve posted to my blog and I apologize in advance. However this hiatus is for good reason indeed. The time away definitely wasn’t wasted. I’ve already cracked the code on a few new dishes which I will get to in another post. I also, more monumentally, purchased a new home. Now I rarely used a microwave until it came built in to my new home right on top of my stove. Never needed it. But now that I have one, I use it. This microwave also serves as a kitchen range hood as well.

So we’re moved in now and I went to cook something nice to celebrate my new and improved kitchen, minus the hole in the wall. To my disappointment, the kitchen exhaust fan that is built in to my range top microwave isn’t effectively removing the smoke. To my surprise it was set up for recirculating venting versus pushing the exhaust out into the duct.

If you are presented with a microwave/kitchen range hood and it’s not removing the exhaust effectively there are a couple of things you can do.

1. Check to see if there is a duct to the outside installed in your building.
2. If there is a duct, ensure that the microwave/kitchen exhaust fan is set up to move air through the duct and that it is not in recirculating mode.

It was very easy to switch my microwave/kitchen range hood from recirculating mode to duct mode. The hardest part was removing the microwave from the brackets but the rest was very simple. In fact I downloaded the manual online and the instructions were a cinch.

My wife and I have been in the market for a new home and we’ ve been looking at some old victorian style houses. In many of older houses, there is simply a range against a wall with no exhaust fan at all. And on many of these homes, there is a gaping hole in the wall which is actually a duct. This very feature has excited me tremendously because I know that if I purchase one of these homes with the duct hole I will be able to install the kitchen exhaust fan of my chosing. And it doesnt have to be a ductless kitchen exhaust fan. With the amount of cooking I do, I should get an industrial range hood but it may not match with the rest of my layout.

It’s still a problem for us in the kitchen, dealing with smoke. This is why it is so important to have some means of ventilation. I made paella the other night with shrimps and when i was boiling the chicken stock with the shrimp shells, the entire house smelled like a fish market. And this was just shrimps. It’s even worse if i do any kind of raw fish. For now we venitlate the place using an open window and a fan but this poses a problem in the winter when it gets cold and we dont necessarily want to open the window to rid of the smoke.

This will eliminate the need to handle caustic chemicals and serves as a “set it and forget it” method of quickly cleaning your kitchen range hood oven. Some models will heat the kitchen hotter than others but many will agree that this would be the easiest way to clean your oven.

Did you know that after cooking, odors usually still remain in the kitchen. Many kitchen range hoods are equipped with auto-off switches. What those are, are delayed off settings so that you can set a fan setting to off after you walk away from the range. If you turn the fan off as soon as you are finished cooking, there may still be smoke emanating from the pans or in the air. These auto off delay switches are great because you can sit down to a meal and know that the fan will shut itself off after an ample amount of time to clear the rest of the air. Many kitchen range hoods available online have this feature. Both Viking and Zephyr range hoods are reputable well respected brands.

We always like to make soups and stocks out of our left over bones from various chicken and meat dishes. One method we employ is a long and slow cooking process of stocks and broths. This requires us to leave our gas kitchen range stove on for extended periods of time at a very low flame. Sometimes, the flame is so low that if a strong draft should enter the kitchen, the flame may go out. This has happened a few times on our really low end chef’s mate range. I can can’t count how many time I came to the stove to find that my stock is room temperature and the knob to the stove is still turned on.

Higher end kitchen ranges with deeper set burners usually aren’t affected in this way. Something to keep in mind if looking for a new range or upgrading your kitchen.

I live in an old apartment. Can’t complain, the rent is cheap and the kitchen range works fine. The only problem is that my landlord did not include a kitchen range hood with my stove. One day while going to the pharmacy to pick up a prescription, the lady at the register told me that I smell like pepperoni. I didn’t know if this was intended to be an insult – as if she thought I was Italian or something, or if I really carried a scent with me. While walking home I recalled that I had cooked some garlic pasta earlier and when I arrived at my apartment and opened the door, the entire apartment smelled like a pizzeria. In effect, not only did my apartment, furniture and carpets smell like what could be mistaken for pepperoni, but so did my clothes. Even the ones in the closet. This all could have been avoided if I had an island range hood installed. But all I have is this gaping hole in the all which I believe is an air duct. BLAH
